Paint Recycling with Abbott

April 07, 2020

empty paint cans to be recycled

We know your Spring projects are ramping up, especially with Governor Walz’s orders to stay inside for the next month due to COVID-19, and we want to help you with your project from start to finish. You can place your paint order online or by calling us at any of our store locations. We will coordinate with you on a time for curbside pickup, or delivery to your house, and you’ll be up and running! Last step is typically to clean up, and we have the solution on how to dispose of your empty paint cans!

At Abbott Paint and Carpet, we strive to serve our community with not only the best home improvement products and service, but also in our recycling and waste reducing efforts. We are proud members of the Minnesota Paint Stewardship Program and all three store locations are approved drop off sites for your used paint cans.

What can be recycled?

We accept house paint and primers, stains, sealers, and clear coatings (e.g., shellac and varnish) but we do not accept aerosols (spray cans), solvents, and products intended for industrial or non-architectural use- these can be from any retail location or brand (not Abbott specific). The products we accept are referred to as “PaintCare Products” or “architectural paint” and they must be in containers that are no larger than 5 gallons in size. Paint must be in its original container and the container must have a label and a secured lid. We cannot accept open or leaking cans. * Please review the detailed list to find out what can be accepted, prior to dropping off your paint on paintcare.org.

How to Recycle

Bring in up to 5 gallons of paint per visit, and drop off with one of our paint staff. They’ll assess the cans to ensure they will be accepted, and provide you with a 10% off coupon to be used on a future paint project!

What Happens to the Paint After You Leave it with Us?

We have partnered with PaintCare because we believe they are the best team of experts to dissect each can and determine the best use for the product. The paint you bring in will either be remixed into recycled paint, used as a fuel, made into other products, or properly disposed of. You can rest assured that what you’re bringing us will be brought back to life in one way or another. A much better alternative to taking up room on a basement or garage shelf.
